Designing Work that Works: Understanding the new Employee Value Proposition

Amy Edmondson Professor of Leadership & Management, Harvard Business School

Mark Mortensen Associate Dean, INSEAD Middle East Campus; Author, Professor of Organizational Behaviour, INSEAD

  • The leader’s most important role in the knowledge era is attracting, engaging, and retaining great employees who do the work that brings the organization’s value proposition to life.
  • Research has identified four broad categories of influences on attraction, engagement and retention: Purpose & Meaning, Community & Connection, Growth & Development, and Material Offerings. These combine to form an employee value proposition (EVP).
  • We identify the relationships among these categories as important drivers of successful employee engagement and, in turn, organizational performance.
  • Designing an integrative EVP that works requires recognizing these interrelationships and adopting an experimental iterative approach.

The ABCs of Driving Digital and AI Transformation

Linda A.Hill Professor of Business Administration, Chair of the Leadership Initiative, Harvard Business School

What does it take to drive innovation at scale?  Although companies can generate innovative solutions, they often struggle to turn them into reality—to launch or commercialize them.  Professor Hill will set the stage by sharing her research on driving innovation in general and then do a deeper dive into her work on digital and AI innovation. Besides conducting in-depth longitudinal studies of leaders driving digital and AI transformation, she has surveyed nearly 10,000 executives and conducted roundtables of 300 executives from across the globe on their key leadership challenges and how they have addressed them.

The Future-Ready Company: What the Best in Seven Industries Have in Common

Howard Yu Professor of Management & Innovation, IMD

Peter Drucker warned that the large organization has to learn to innovate, or it won’t survive. A few companies manage it again and again. Howard Yu directs IMD’s Center for Future Readiness, which ranks the largest companies in seven industries, from technology and finance to cars, pharma, fashion, consumer goods and travel, using public data. The most future-ready companies in these very different industries share the same few principles. With cases from Delta and McDonald’s to LEGO and Nvidia, Howard walks through three of them: perform and transform at the same time, own your learning and show it, and make yourself ridiculously easy to work with. Participants leave with a quick way to see which principle their own organization is currently lacking. Most importantly, what can you do about it.

The Power of Strategic Centering

Rita McGrath Professor of Strategy, Columbia Business School

We are in the midst of a technological and social revolution, whose singular characteristic is dematerialization. This disrupts the boundary conditions under which conventional strategy operates. The choice of a strategic center can provide clarity for decision-making, inform resource allocation choices and enable permissionless action.  There are at least 5 ways to center an organization:  mission, customer, technology/capability, friction removal or ecosystem/region. We will explore how you might put these ideas to work in your own organization.
