Drucker Reader: an essential compendium of articles offering a firm and practical grip of the role of the manager.
The central theme
Peter Drucker (1909–2005) was the most influential management thinker of
the 20th century. Born in Vienna, he not only shaped the concept of modern management but also laid the intellectual foundations for how organisations can think about innovation.
Innovation, for Drucker, was not primarily something a company engineers from within. It was a response to forces unfolding outside the firm — in society, demography, politics, and culture.
Peter Drucker's definition
In his important Innovation and Entrepreneurship (1985), Drucker defines innovation as
"the effort to create purposeful, focused change in an enterprise's economic or social
potential."
Innovation is not simply a tool for profit — it is an act of social consequence. For Drucker, innovation is "the specific instrument of entrepreneurship... the act that endows resources with a new capacity to create wealth." Resources, in this framing, are not invented inside corporations. They are discovered in the world and given meaning through human action:
• Innovation is work, not inspiration
Innovation requires processes, time, and the right question: What has changed?
• Innovation means rethinking resources
Ask not only “What do we have?” but rather: “What more could our existing assets achieve if deployed differently?”
• Innovation is a mindset
Innovation begins the moment leadership decides to look forward.
