The Hofburg is the former principal imperial palace and winter residence of the Habsburg dynasty. Located in the center of Vienna, the original structure dates back to the 13th century and has been extended a number of times since. Since 1946 it has served as the official residence and workplace of the president of Austria. It is the capital’s No 1 venue for events and exhibitions as well as banquets, balls and concerts.

TRANSPORTATION IN THE CITY
 

From Vienna-Schwechat Airport to the city centre
 

TAXIS / CAR SHARING
Vienna airport taxis operate a fixed price from 36€ from the airport to Vienna. Other taxi companies can be found here. The taxis use the same outside location as the buses (see below).


CITY AIRPORT TRAIN
CAT operates a fast non-stop train service between the airport and the city center. A single ticket costs €11, a return €19, bookable online (City Airport Train) or at the airport. On arrival at the airport, follow signs to trains and walk down the ramp to the train station. Journey time is 16 minutes.


TRAINS
On arrival at the airport, follow the signs and walk down the ramp to the train station. Buy tickets at either the ÖBB (Austrian railways) ticket office or machines located under the terminal. A display board shows departure times for all trains leaving the airport for Vienna and elsewhere. Down the ramp, you quickly reach platforms 1-2 for the trains.


BUSES
Vienna Airport Lines runs services to various destinations in Vienna. For more information visit the website.

Bus Linie Val 1 is a direct service from the airport to Wien Hauptbahnhof (U1, 13A, 18), terminating at Wien Westbahnhof (U3, U6, 5, 6, 9, 49, 52).

Bus stops are situated immediately outside the terminal arrival hall.

Weather and Clothing
 

Vienna has a mild continental climate. In November, temperatures vary between 5 and 15 degrees Celsius bringing sunny as well as foggy days. We advise you to bring warm and windproof clothing to discover this beautiful city!

Currency

All major credit cards (VISA, American Express and MasterCard) are accepted in most shops, hotels and restaurants. It is advisable to carry an identity card or some form of photo identification.


Electricity Supply
 

Electricity supply is 220 volts/50Hz throughout Austria with "European" 2-pin type wall sockets. For any European or other countries that utilize 240 volts e.g. UK and Ireland electrical equipment will need a plug adapter to fit Austrian sockets.

Americans and Canadians with 110 volts equipment will need a plug adapter and a transformer to step up the voltage to 220 volts. These can be bought at any hardware store.


Passport and Visa
 

An identity card is sufficient for participants from EU-member countries. Other nationalities may require a visa* or a passport valid for a determinate period to enter the European Union. For specific information, please contact the Austrian Embassy of your country at least six weeks prior to your departure.

*The letter of invitation for visa application will only be delivered after payment of the registration fee.

Time zone (from October 30th) is Central European Time CET, i.e. UTC/GMT +1 hour
