As leaders work to reconcile enterprise profitability and employee prosperity, how should we think about growth, engagement, and the practice of management? As work is increasingly digitized, networked, and automated, is a new kind of leadership required? How to create energy and engagement in these new settings.

Session abstract by Session Chair Michael Skapinker

Growing access to customer and workplace data, allied to mobile communication, has enabled managers and their teams to make more informed, fact-based decisions. At the same time, employees are worried about the disruption that these technologies are causing and the potential threat to their jobs. This session will examine what leadership means in these new circumstances. How can leaders establish a vision and strategy for their teams when conditions are so uncertain and when new forms of competition are arising all the time? How can leaders cope not only with the profusion of data, but also with how widely distributed it is: knowledge and access to knowledge does not necessarily reside in the most senior members of the teams. It is no respecter of hierarchy. The panel will discuss whether we need a new philosopy and style of leadership, or whether leadership, despite all the changes, is what it always has been.
