Abstract
KEY MESSAGE
Shareholder value, stakeholder value – seen from the inside
Against the global backdrop of the limits to growth, the widening gap between rich and poor, and the volatility of the financial system, management focus on maximizing shareholder value has come into question. A different model has been offered as a better alternative: stakeholder value. It posits that balancing the interests of all stakeholders (shareholders, employees, customers, business partners, and communities) – for example, through mechanisms such as co-determination – is more likely to lead to long-term success. The speaker offers his observations as an executive who moved from one of the most successful American shareholder-value driven enterprises to a German corporation that by law and by culture is stakeholder focused.
