We dress it up with overused buzzwords, dashboards, and KPIs\u2014but behind the curtain, many organizations are still \u201cmuddling through\u201d using management techniques developed in the industrial 20<sup>th<\/sup> century. Decisions are reactive rather than proactive. Strategies are stuck in the past. And leaders? Too often, executives become overwhelmed by firefighting instead of shaping the future. More often than not, they chase the next big thing\u2014currently AI\u2014instead of simply managing better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the unmanaged state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not chaos but it\u2019s not mastery either. \u2018Unmanaged\u2019 becomes the default mode most organizations operate in, especially when facing uncertainty or complexity. It is a state where management is taken for granted because the generally accepted principles were pounded into executives at universities worldwide. This provides cover to poor leaders where leadership relies more on personal heroics than systemic thinking and where performance is driven by organizational inertia rather than insight and innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But here\u2019s the good news. There\u2019s another way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What Does \u201cUnmanaged\u201d Really Mean?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we use the term \u201cunmanaged,\u201d we don\u2019t mean \u201canarchy\u201d or \u201cno rules.\u201d We mean <em>the absence of effective management<\/em>. It is about applying systems and structures that no longer fit the disruptive world of the 21<sup>st<\/sup> century. Management techniques designed for an industrial age of predictability now struggle to adapt in a fast-paced, interconnected, digital economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In unmanaged organizations, you\u2019ll find:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Leaders overwhelmed with complexity, but lacking the tools to deal with it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Teams siloed by functions or hierarchy, missing the bigger picture.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Decisions made by gut instinct, not data or insight.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Culture shaped by inertia rather than intention.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Now imagine a different kind of organization. One where decisions are made with clarity. Where organizational learning is constant and where performance is driven by purpose, not pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s what we mean by mastery in management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cMuddling Through\u201d Is Not a Strategy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s not blame leaders. Most are doing their best within outdated systems inherited from the 1900s. They are told to \u201cbe agile,\u201d \u201cthink digital,\u201d and \u201ctransform\u201d but they\u2019re rarely given a clear map or modern tools to work with. They inherit decades-old models that reward short-term wins over long-term growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what happens? We get the illusion of control. Leaders check boxes, roll out initiatives, and attend leadership trainings but the core of how the organization <em>actually works<\/em> remains untouched. And when something breaks (which it often does), the response is to work harder, not smarter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This cycle of working harder instead of thinking differently is the essence of muddling through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why We Need Better Management<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we want better organizations, we need better management. Not more management. Not tighter control. Better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Management is the invisible infrastructure of an organization. It is how we coordinate work, create value, learn, and adapt. When it\u2019s broken\u2014or simply outdated\u2014no amount of leadership charisma can compensate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Better management is not about control. It\u2019s about clarity, coherence, and capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we get these attributes right, the results are transformative:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Teams become self-driven instead of micromanaged.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Strategy becomes a dynamic living process, not a PowerPoint deck.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Learning becomes natural, not a forced initiative.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Innovation emerges from collaboration, not luck.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>That is the future we should be aiming for. A future where management is no longer the problem but a competitive advantage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Turning Point: From Management as Maintenance to Management as Mastery<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Traditional management techniques were designed to maintain stability, keep costs low, reduce variation, optimize output. It worked great in factories. But today, organizations need to evolve, adapt, and learn in real time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mastery in management is the shift from <em>maintenance<\/em> to <em>movement<\/em>. It means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Seeing management as a craft, not a checklist.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Designing systems that grow and adapt with the organization.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enabling leaders to lead with awareness, not just authority.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And here\u2019s the exciting part. Mastery in management isn\u2019t just for tech startups or elite innovators. It\u2019s for any organization ready to move beyond muddling through to make management a competitive advantage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many mid-sized European companies are already leading the way. Their success doesn\u2019t come from following trends, it comes from rethinking management itself. Increasingly, large enterprises and public sector organizations are beginning to follow suit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Inner Game of Management<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the breakthroughs that makes this shift possible is applying the <em>Inner Game<\/em> to management. Originally developed by Timothy Gallwey for sports and personal performance, the <em>Inner Game<\/em> is about focusing attention, awareness, and trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the context of management, the <em>Inner Game<\/em> means helping leaders see what they couldn\u2019t see before. It\u2019s less about teaching new skills and more about unlearning habits that no longer serve their purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When leaders learn to focus attention on what really matters, they make better decisions. They stop reacting and start reflecting.
