Of course the bounty produced by economic growth should be broadly shared. But the devil is in the details, and when people advocate for inclusive growth they don\u2019t always have the same things in mind.<\/p>\n<p>Some, for example, are inspired by Thomas Piketty, who seems to have singlehandedly set <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/After-Piketty-Agenda-Economics-Inequality\/dp\/0674504771\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1489507117&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=after+piketty\">a new agenda<\/a> for economics research. This group focuses on reducing the disturbing inequalities in individuals\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Basic-Income-Radical-Proposal-Society\/dp\/0674052285\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1490012058&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=van+parijs+basic+income\">incomes<\/a> and wealth.<\/p>\n<p>Others, like the Legatum Institute, think of prosperity less in financial terms and more as overall well-being, and focus on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prosperity.com\/\">measuring and growing all its components<\/a> in societies around the world.<\/p>\n<p>A third group takes a more managerial approach; and that\u2019s the one we want to focus on here. When Eric Beinhocker and Nick Hanauer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/global-themes\/long-term-capitalism\/redefining-capitalism\">took on the topic<\/a>, they put it this way: \u201cProsperity in a society is <em>the accumulation of solutions to human problems<\/em>.\u201d By emphasizing <em>solutions<\/em> as the engine of growth, Beinhocker and Hanauer wanted to cast capitalism as a force for prosperity (as the system that churns out the most constant stream of superior ones). But their way of thinking about prosperity also offers direction for any managers who want to work harder to make the world better off: your mission is to imagine, develop, and launch more life-improving solutions, especially the kinds of goods and services that improve ordinary people\u2019s lives. Businesses have a variety of social responsibilities, but the essential one\u2014and the main reason that private enterprise is given license to operate\u2014is to innovate.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019d like to add a wrinkle to Beinhocker and Hanauer\u2019s argument. If we\u2019re thinking about prosperity in broad terms, then we should also recognize it isn\u2019t just the solutions themselves that improve quality of life \u2013 it\u2019s also <em>engagement in the act of solving<\/em>. Participating in the satisfying work of innovating enriches lives by endowing them with purpose, dignity, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2011\/05\/the-power-of-small-wins\">sheer joy of making progress<\/a> in challenging endeavors. Imaginative problem-solving is part of human nature. Participating in it is essential to the good life \u2013 and no elite minority should have a monopoly on that.<\/p>\n<p>So this raises the question: How do we enable more people to get involved in solving problems? Every person is capable of creative thought and action. Great managers know how to tap that superabundant resource, and they recognize that pooling creative energy usually accelerates progress. Many minds make lighter work.<\/p>\n<p>But for this to happen broadly, more organizations need to recognize that their innovation mandate is not just to design new products and services, but also to redesign how work gets done. \u00a0The digital age gives us a tremendous opportunity to do that \u2013 but also comes with its own challenges and risks. How businesses continue to develop and deploy information and communications technologies will profoundly affect whether prosperity is inclusive or exclusive. At their best, today\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Only-Humans-Need-Apply-Machines\/dp\/0062438611\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1489526632&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=only+humans+need+apply+winners+%26+losers+in+the+age+of+smart+machines\">increasingly capable machines enable and empower people<\/a> to collaborate more effectively, and they make learning from experience scalable. Collaborative platforms allow people to combine their measurements and observations of large-scale phenomena (such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldwatermonitoringday.org\/about\">water quality<\/a>), while advances in machine learning, artificial intelligence, and sheer computational power extend the powers of human intellect just as earlier technologies amplified human strength.<\/p>\n<p>But at their worst, smart machines have the potential to marginalize human contributions, automating cognitive work and leaving society with, as <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2014\/12\/what-happens-to-society-when-robots-replace-workers\">Bill Davidow and Michael Malone<\/a> vividly phrased it, \u201chordes of citizens of zero economic value.\u201d The situation creates huge responsibilities for politicians, educators, executives, and others to manage the transition and the hardships that may come with it.<\/p>\n<p>We find ourselves, therefore, at an important crossroads. The technologies our species is developing might either hold the keys to unlocking human potential \u2014 or to locking it up more tightly than ever. Indeed, they could even transform what we think of <em>as<\/em> human potential, given the startling new combinations of technological and human capabilities being devised. (No need to wait for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2017\/3\/27\/15077864\/elon-musk-neuralink-brain-computer-interface-ai-cyborgs\">Elon Musk\u2019s Neuralink<\/a>. As DARPA\u2019s Arati Prabhakar has described, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.co.uk\/article\/darpa-arati-prabhakar-humans-machines\">the merging of humans and machines is happening now.<\/a> )<\/p>\n<p>Clay Christensen likes to remind innovators of the importance of remembering the essential \u201cjob to be done\u201d by their offerings \u2013 what is it that customers \u201chire\u201d your product or service to do for them? In that spirit, what is the \u201cjob to be done\u201d by the practice of management itself? What is the job that society needs to get done that it turns to competent managers to do?
