Abstract

Overcoming the dark side of technology

We significantly under-estimate the mounting performance pressure that digital technology infrastructures are generating on a global scale for individuals and institutions. To address these pressures, companies will need to ask the most basic question of all: what business are we in? Most companies today are an unnatural bundle of three very different business types: infrastructure management, product innovation and commercialization, and customer relationship businesses. To succeed in this new world, companies will need to choose one of these business types and shed the other two – this is critical to accelerating learning. Doing this effectively will require mastering the ability to participate in larger and larger ecosystems. The rewards are great: for the first time, we have the opportunity to shift from a diminishing returns business world to an increasing returns business world.
